Oris is incredibly proud to present its first bronze watch in honor of the extraordinary life of Carl Brashear, the US Navy’s first African-American Master Diver.
Based on the highly successful Oris Divers Sixty-Five, the Oris Carl Brashear Limited Edition commemorates a man who overcame not only the challenges of his race, but also those of a physical disability.
Carl Brashear Graduated In 1954, With His Bronze Helmet Beside Him
Carl Brashear, born in 1931, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1948. Although he was severely discriminated against on account of his race, he graduated from the U.S. Navy Diving & Salvage School in 1954, becoming the first African-American U.S. Navy Diver. In 1966 he lost his left leg after an accident during a mission to salvage a hydrogen bomb.
After a lengthy rehabilitation period, he became in 1968 the first amputated diver in the US Navy and graduated in 1970 as its first African-American Master Diver. After a distinguished career of over 30 years in the Navy, Brashear went into retirement in 1979. He died in 2006 at the age of 75 years. His remarkable story was the inspiration for the movie Men of Honour in 2000, in which Brashear was portrayed by Oscar-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr.
The watch honoring Brashear’s life and courageous nature is the very first Oris watch to be crafted from bronze, a naturally aging material used in diving helmets in the 1950s. The design of the watch is based on the Oris Divers Sixty-Five, but has a diameter of 42mm.
Bronze is initially light and shiny, then darkens as the copper component reacts with carbon dioxide and moisture. This means that each of the limited edition of 2000 pieces will develop a unique patina over time – and a unique relationship with its owner.
The unidirectional rotating bezel is also made of bronze, with a raised minute scale to track dive times. A feature that recalls a number of divers watches from the Oris archives. The stainless steel case back shows Brashear’s helmet and his very personal motto. An automatic mechanical movement ticks under the dark blue dial and the watch is water resistant to 100 meters.
The Oris Carl Brashear Limited Edition offers a unique opportunity to own the first bronze Oris watch, as well as to pay tribute to a man whose beliefs changed the course of history and to support the Carl Brashear Foundation. A man of honor.
