Cartier Nailed it

Aldo Cipullo, the creative mind behind Cartier’s iconic and bestselling Love bracelet in his very first year at Cartier New York, is without a doubt, one of the greatest jewellery designers in our modern times. Not content with Cartier Love, Cipullo would two years later in 1971, create Juste un Clou, translated from French as ‘Just a Nail’.

When the ordinary becomes precious with Cartier ! Designed in 1970s New York, the first Juste un Clou bracelet reflected a wild, freewheeling era. Bold, modern, and innovative, Juste un Clou is a creative twist on a familiar object.

The jewellery designer Aldo Cipullo put a luxurious spin on a simple, everyday piece of hardware by crafting the Juste un Clou bracelet for Cartier New York. Comprising a single, elongated nail that looped around the wearer’s wrist, the bracelet quickly became a hit among fashionistas because of its utilitarian-chic aesthetic.

Its effortlessly edgy appeal didn’t end there. In 2012, Cartier produced an exhibition of Cipullo’s work and re-released the Nail bracelet in yellow, white and pink gold as well as a special version pavé set entirely with diamonds. The brand revived its Juste un Clou design by translating it into an assortment of necklaces, rings and earrings. These jewels were fashioned in yellow, pink and white gold, and some even came bedecked with glittering diamonds.

Celebrities and models the likes of Kristen Stewart, Miranda Kerr and Alexandra Ambrosio embraced these industrial-cool pieces, and it wasn’t long before Cartier’s classic nail bracelet became the latest ‘It’ accessory to possess.

At the moment (April 5-9 at the Garage Santiago), Cartier has once again breathed new life to the collection, presenting new pieces in a themed design exhibition called ‘When the Ordinary Becomes Precious’ at the Salone del Mobile in Milan.

The pop up installation designed by Desi Santiago explored the subject of appropriating familiar hardware – such as the nail that inspired Juste Un Clou and the nut behind the Écrou de Cartier – into sophisticated jewellery.

Taking into account the Juste un Clou line’s timeless style, Cartier recently added several new designs to its repertoire. A highlight is the Juste un Clou torque, a sleek nail-shaped necklace available in options of yellow, pink and white gold, and encrusted with diamonds on the nail’s head and tip.

In the same vein as its refreshed Juste un Clou range, the maison has also rolled out its Écrou de Cartier line of bracelets – which opts for a similarly utilitarian path with its use of nuts (the hardware, not the dry fruit) as decorative ornaments. The bracelets are fashioned in pink and white gold, and are each adorned with six octagonal nuts.

Appropriate for him or for her, the Juste un Clou with its sleek unisex design and organic curves, can easily be pulled off in any outfit, street to eveningwear. It is also a statement piece that continues to allow wearers to express their unique personalities.

Cartier’s Juste un Clou lasting transcendence over 40 years attests to its timeless design and versatility. Come into the beautiful world of Cartier.
