Jean Paul Gaultier’s musical signed by the designer himself

French fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier is writing, producing, and directing a musical about his own life. Called ‘Fashion Freak Show’, the show will feature videos, the designer’s favorite songs, circus performers and, of course, iconic costumes from the designer’s career, as well as new creations.

Known for works that go beyond Haute Couture, such as the costume production of the films ‘The Fifth Element’ and ‘The Skin That Habito’, the success of his eponymous perfume or even the elaboration of the iconic cone-shaped bras of singer Madonna, Gaultier confessed to WWD that he is fulfilling a childhood dream with this musical.

I remember watching on TV the premiere of a musical at Folies Bergère. The image was in black and white and people were very well dressed. It was a transcendent experience, I thought it was beautiful.

Asked about the name’s decision, Jean explained to WWD. “Freak c’est chic. For me differences are beautiful, there is not only a beauty, and I always liked to mix them in my collections. When we look at things and people, there will always be codes and patterns about what is considered ugly or beautiful. I’ve always questioned that”.

The play is scheduled to premiere on October 2, 2018 at Folies Bergère. According to the couturier, the story promises to focus on his life in fashion, journalists, the action of backstages and models. “It’s about everything we know, only with more feathers and glamour”.

Come into the beautiful world of Jean Paul Gaultier.
